- The China History Podcast (feed). 90% killer. It took me a while to warm to the host, Laszlo Montgomery, but now I’m hooked. He’s so curious and enthusiastic about epic stories of the various peoples of China and their complicated history, warts and wonders both, and is just so warm in inviting us to share his wonder. A world where we’re all as interested as Laszlo is a better world.

4 Practicalities
4.1 The Great Firewall
Perplexity says I need something fancier than a basic VPN.
Reportedly, a regular OpenVPN or WireGuard handshake is recognisable to deep packet inspection and gets dropped on sight; the workaround is to dress the tunnel up as innocuous TLS-over-HTTPS. Protocols like Hysteria2 / VLESS / Trojan and Shadowsocks all do variants of this. Shadowrocket is a popular iOS client; on desktop, Clash Verge Rev seems to be the go. See VPNs § Stealth mode for general context on how these fit alongside ordinary VPNs.
